Effectiveness Monitoring of Forest Practice Regulations, Washington

Surveyed over 1400 landslides in southwest Washington to determine the effectiveness of the state’s forest practice regulations with respect to slope stability.  Directed field crews visiting 22 randomly selected four square mile clusters (over 56,000 acres) mapped and collected site data on all landslides present. Using ArcGIS, we designed and managed a geodatabase and created multipage data forms using ArcPad application builder software.  Created detailed maps with ArcMap software used for field navigation and data collection. Data points were collected by a 16 person field crew using Trimble Nomad GPS units and post processed using GPS Analyst. A final geodatabase was prepared for detailed statistical analyses upon which study conclusions were based.

Vineyard Mapping, Sonoma County, California

Surveyed multiple vineyards using a Trimble XT handheld GIS unit. Survey data was imported into ArcMap and post processed using GPS Analyst for sub-meter accuracy. Cartographic presentations were created delineating vineyard boundaries, block and clonel changes as well as individual rows and acreage by block and clone. Irrigation risers, pumps and other infrastructure requested by the client were surveyed in the field and depicted on the maps.

Hydrological Assessment and Sediment Budget, Annapolis, Sonoma County

A hydrological assessment was performed to determine the impact of a THP and conversion to vineyard on erosion and sedimentation processes.  A sediment budget was constructed from site scale field measurements, available landslide inventory data, and applicable sediment TMDL’s to place vineyard erosion in context with watershed erosion. ArcGIS was used to organize and analyze the numerous datasets efficiently. GPS points taken in the field were imported into ArcGIS and linked to field survey data in a geodatabase. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data was processed using the Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst Extensions to create slope and hillshade models, vector stream lines for the Gualala River watershed  were also created. Descriptive maps were created to assist in field work as well as display survey data and  study results.
